People often choose to undergo Breast Augmentation Surgery to enlarge the size of their breasts following pregnancy, ageing and weight loss. Implants can also be used to correct asymmetry or for reconstruction after breast cancer.
When using breast implants for cosmetic cases we exclusively use silicone implants. These have been used for breast augmentation for more than 30 years and have reliable long-term data. An alternative to the use of breast implants is Fat Grafting or our Vegan Breast Augmentation procedure, in which fat is taken from one area of the body by liposuction and transferred to the breasts to provide a permanent, implant-free breast enlargement.

FULVIO’S ADVICE
Before embarking on cosmetic surgery always do your research and find a reliable surgeon with a good local reputation. A consultation usually takes at least half an hour and it should be with the surgeon rather than a nurse or patient coordinator. I like to meet at least twice before surgery so you can ask all the questions you've thought of between meetings.
AFTERCARE
Pain medication is typically only needed for a few days, and swelling reduces after a few weeks. After the surgery, you will be asked to wear a post-surgical bra and will be given postoperative exercises to optimise results. You should be able to return to work after 1-2 weeks. Wounds will be checked at 1 week, and we’ll meet again at 1, 3 and 6 months.

Implant size, shape and projection are decided in the clinic through a four-step process: firstly, we run through an accurate history of your current and desired breast size, to estimate the approximate volume increase you need; next I take measurements of your breasts and chest wall, to assess what will actually fit your body; then using a 3D simulation we fine-tune the exact size and shape you most prefer; and finally, you wear external sizers over your breasts in a bra, to simulate the weight change you can expect and to see how your new breasts would look in your usual clothes. Most patients are very happy with their implant selection after running through this process.

Breastfeeding with implants is both safe and viable. However, as for appearance, pregnancy does change the breasts whether you have had implants or not and can leave the breasts looking saggy. A large proportion of women will seek surgery to restore their breast appearance after having children.

Breast implants should be checked by a surgeon around ten years after surgery. Whilst implants are not designed to last indefinitely, if you are not experiencing problems then there is no need to check or replace them. However, if you have your implants inserted at a younger age, then they will likely need replacing at some point.

Every procedure has its risks, but based on 50 years of experience since the first use of breast implants, breast augmentation is a safe and reliable procedure overall. The PIP scandal in 2012 – where implants made from unauthorised silicone filler were revealed to have double the rupture rate of other implants, affecting 47,000 women in the UK – undoubtedly took its toll on the industry, but it’s important we remember this was the result of an isolated criminal act on the part of one manufacturer, not something that translates to breast augmentation as a whole. It also goes without saying that a procedure is only safe if done by a qualified and experienced surgeon.

Every procedure has its risks. I am fastidious about antimicrobial precautions - not just to avoid infection, but to reduce the chance of capsule formation many years later. Precautions include covering your nipples during surgery, washing the implant cavity with antibacterial solution, opening the implants immediately before they are needed, using fresh gloves to handle them and inserting them through a sterile funnel. BIA-ALCL, a type of cancer caused by breast implants is extremely rare but also treatable. It affects around one in 300,000 people with breast implants. It also goes without saying that a procedure is only safe if done by a qualified and experienced surgeon.

Generally, patients only need simple painkillers for the first few days after surgery. You should book a week off work in case you need it, but most patients say they feel like a fraud by the third or fourth day! If your job is office-based, it is often possible to return to work within a few days. However, picking up small children and driving should be avoided for the first fortnight and be wary of any sexual activity for at least the first week. Moreover, strenuous activities such as running, horse-riding and heavy gym work should be avoided for up to six weeks. Saving your energy to heal the body post-surgery is the most sensible way to reduce the risk of complications.
